Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) you would drive ambulances under both normal and emergency conditions and support the work of qualified ambulance technicians and paramedics.
Your day-to-day duties would include:
· Using advanced driving skills to respond to medical emergencies and critical care transfers.
· Transporting patients between clinics for planned appointments and treatment
· Safely transferring patients to and from ambulance vehicles, using suitable equipment and manual handling skills
· Helping ambulance paramedics and technicians deal with urgent and emergency admissions.
· Working as part of a first aid team at public events.
· Responding to any other medical situation as directed by the emergency control centre, statutory ambulance service or other body.
· Helping to complete a handover report, recording all patient information on company PRF’s (Patient Report Forms)
· Making sure your vehicle is roadworthy and properly kitted out and cleaned (paying particular attention to infection prevention) after every call.
When responding to an emergency, you would have little warning of the exact circumstances. For example, you could be involved in:
· Carrying out basic scene safety checks and assessing the risk to yourself and others, in line with health and safety guidelines
· Contacting the emergency control centre to request extra support when needed
· Carrying out basic diagnostic procedures under the direct supervision of a paramedic or technician
· Supporting the delivery of first aid and minor emergency treatments
· Monitoring and treating patients until they are transferred
Your work would involve communicating with patients and relatives with dignity and respect in often challenging circumstances. You would also work closely with emergency services, relevant health and social care professionals.
EMS requires candidates to have the following qualifications:
· A current FPOS-I Certificate (First Person On Scene – Intermediate)
· Full UK Driving Licence with Category B and C1
· IHCD BTEC/EdExcel D1/D2 Driving Certificate or equivalent
· A good standard of education (for example, 3 or 4 GCSEs (A-C) including English, maths and a science subject)
· Experience of working in a patient care setting, ideally in the NHS or Private Sector.
A full Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be carried out when you apply for this role.
This can take around nine weeks to receive back from the submission date.
For your first six months in post, you will be monitored and assessed as part of an on-going training programme by either an experienced Technician, Paramedic or Clinical Team Leader. The ECA role is NOT the same as a Technician’s role and there are clear boundaries as to what you may and may not do regarding patient care and responsibilities. ECA’s will always be crewed with a Qualified Ambulance Technician or State Registered Paramedic.
On some occasions you may be required alongside a Station Officer, or Nurse where the needs of the company dictate special clinical skills such as cardiac transfers, or ITU patient transfers.
During your employment, you will need to keep up to date with advances in patient care relevant to your role. This information and update training will be provided by the company. You will be expected to continue your professional development and keep a portfolio of practical and clinical experiences that show your skills and knowledge, we willassist you in this task, normally supported by either a manager or team leader.

You must work within the confines of the said and stated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
In addition you must ensure that the above responsibilities are met and such other duties and tasks as are allocated at the discretion of the Company are within the your capabilities and within the scope of the post.
