Yorkshire Ambulance Service and our partners Local Care Direct are working together to deliver the new NHS 111 call handling services in the Yorkshire and Humber region and the provision of urgent care in the West Yorkshire and Craven area commencing March 2013. The single memorable 111 number will enable patients to call for advice and assistance 24/7 365 days a year. Would you like to be at the forefront of the launch of the exciting new service to assist patients to access urgent care services?

As a call handler for the NHS 111 service you will be the first point of contact for communication with patients, patients’ relatives, healthcare professionals and other callers. Using NHS Pathways to record patients’ demographics and basic clinical information you will provide assessment, basic advice and health information to patients and ensure they are directed to the most appropriate healthcare professional or end disposition including advice to manage their symptoms at home.

Applicants must have strong customer service skills, effective listening, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to deal with complex, sensitive and distressing information. You must also have a minimum of 5 GCSE’s or equivalent including maths and English.

We are looking for predominantly part time staff (minimum 15 hours per week), some flexible full time staff and a regular nights team. Providing a totally flexible service working as part of the NHS 111 team at one of our call centres in either Wakefield, York or Rotherham. Your working hours will need to be flexible as the majority of our patients call during weekends, evenings and especially bank holidays when demand for our service is at its highest. All staff will be required to work most weekends and depending on the actual hours worked you will attract up to 25% unsocial hours payments.

Training will be provided on either a full-time or part-time basis at the start of employment. This post is subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check at an enhanced level.
